We are Sex Bob-Omb and we are here to make you think about death and get sad and stuff.
Why did I watch it?
It’s directed by Edgar Wright, and though I was disappointed by the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy I keep hoping he’ll do something as good as Spaced.
Did it meet expectations?
It’s as good as Spaced! (Or very nearly)
It has that frenetic visual surreality of Spaced (maybe also as a result of its comic book source – and there’s a nod to Fight Club too) and a collection of likeable self-absorbed geeks. Pilgrim flits around oblivious to the feelings of his exes, but when a new girl catches his eye he has to fight her exes.
The dialogue is sharp, the comic book/video game graphics superbly executed without being intrusive. The characters are well realised (I particularly enjoyed The Newsroom’s Alison Pill as the band’s moody drummer, and the insanely enthusiastic Knives Chau). The whole thing is a lot of fun.
You should watch it if…
- You liked Spaced
You shouldn’t watch it if…
- You don’t want to discover the circumstances in which the line “You just headbutted my boyfriend so hard he burst” was uttered.
