I’ve become quite a fan of the Bourne films but Universal spending out now on the exclusive rights is bad news.
I’ve never read Bourne and hadn’t realised there were so many books, but the films were unusual in each sequel improved on its predecessor. I was unimpressed on first watching Identity but Ultimatum bowled me over. It’d be hard to improve on it again.
There was a neat arc to the well planned trilogy, and the ending, with Julia Stiles just twitching a smile, has to be one of the top kick-ass film endings of all time and a terrific way to end the series. What a shame not to go out on that high.

In pleasant ignorance, I escaped the fact that it’s Children in Need night, until 5 minutes ago, when the first two minutes of The Next Doctor popped into my RSS feed.
A quick look at the costume that Mr Morrisey is wearing and I was convinced that he will be the new Doctor.

Two minutes later, having watched the clip, I am convinced he will be the new Christopher Biggins. This is utterly, utterly blatantly The One Doctor and all those who put money on the favorite stand to lose heavily. Will Gareth Roberts and Clayton Hickman get a credit? And, more importantly, can it possibly even begin to approach the genius of TOD?
Nice looking Cyberman, btw. Pity we know from the Journey’s End teaser that they’re about as genuine as the STARDIS.

Bit of a break out bid today, on the minus side. Â Three casualties.
Inside, the worms are abandoning the compost and climbing up the lid. I think they’re finding it too damp. They get two sports supplements from the Guardian, plus a special internet pullout.
Two pluses:
- They’re giagantsomely fat and there’s approximately a bgzillion of them. Â Despite being over rich in lemon rind and onion peel, my diet suits them.
- There are some teeny tiny ones, which can only be taken as evidence of procreation. Â Implies a happy and expanding colony.
Oh yes, and another plus – the flies have gone.

I thought it was just me. Indeed everyone I confided this theory to has pooh pooh-ed it.
Then I looked up one of Peter Bradshaw’s (two, contradictory) reviews and found that he too had spotted references to other Bond films in Quantum of Solace. And, bar the obvious Goldfinger reference, they’re different ones.
Are there any others? Is it possible that every film was subtly referenced?
Show ▼
Â
- Dr No
At the end of the film, Bond is sitting in the dark with his gun out waiting for the Algerian, just as he waiting for Professor Dent at Taro’s house (also less obviously referenced at the start of Casino Royale). My spot!
- Goldfinger
Fields is lying on the bed, covered in oil just as Jill Masterson was covered in gold paint. Me & Bradshaw.
- Live and Let Die
The coffins in the pile up in Haiti. Bradshaw (seeing a reference to the voodoo in LaLD).
- The Spy Who Loved Me
The skydive. Bradshaw.
- The Living Daylights
Bond flies a DC-3 and ejects before it crashes, though not aboard a humvee as from the Hercules in TLD. My spot
- Licence to Kill
In the hotel, when M tells Bond he’s on the capture or kill list he vaults over the balustrade, just has he vaulted the verandah as he handed in his resignation (“it’s a farewell to arms”). My spot.
- Casino Royale
Doesn’t count – too obvious!

It’s back on BBC One for series 2 on Saturday, with a deservingly prominent position in the schedule.

Wary though I am after the controversy stirred up last time I had to post a picture of these shetland blacks also from the potato man at the farmers’ market.

I was surpised, when I cut into them, that the blue is just a seam near the surface. Clever camoflage to hide the yellow within… and they are not any where near as tasty as the salad blues.

I’m drunk, damp and deafened. I’ve had a very good time.
