You Know My Name

After rumours that Goldfrapp and Tina Turner were to record the title song for Casino Royale it has finally been confirmed that the song will be written (with David Arnold) and performed by Chris Cornell, and entitled “You Know My Name”. It is unusual for the song to have a different title to the film, although whether the film’s title will feature in the song at all (as in The Spy Who Loved Me‘s Nobody Does It Better) or not (as in Octopussy‘s All Time High) is not yet clear.

I’m not sure who Chris Cornell is, so at the moment I’m a bit disappointed not to be getting a Goldfrapp Bond theme.

  1. I wouldn’t mind if they took the everything including the negatives about the 1967 Casino Royale and dropped it off the continental shelf, but I kinda wish this new film could keep the original Casino Royale theme – updated, perhaps, but what a great theme!

  3. I think that might undermine the whole new “serious” thing they’re doing with Bond (again), if, aftercasting Daniel Craig and going back to “the roots” the titles blare out Burt’s Austin Powers style theme….

Almost anything that reminds me of the 1967 film is bad. There were only two things I liked about it: The Look of Love (obviously), and the gag when Woody Allen is about to get shot. I laughed at that, otherwise I sat through the whole thing with frozen look of horror on my face. A string of my heroes: great British comedy actors, embarrased themselves in the worst spoof I’ve ever seen (Austin Powers and Our Man Flint not withstanding).

    Eugh.

Let’s hope Chris Cornell turns out something more memorable that Eric Serra’s The Experience of Love, Scott Walker’s Only Myself To Blame or even Anthony Newley’s version of Goldfinger.

  5. Obviously, they couldn’t use the trumpets, but perhaps with reinstumentation (is that actually a word?) to make it something more like a combination between David Arnold’s work and the theme from On Her Majesty’s Secret Server. 🙂

  7. Well, I’ll go for a David Arnold version of almost anything (Bond Themes, Shaft, Randall & Hopkirk… only his Doctor Who theme for Eight disappointed).

It’s just that, if the atmospherics of the poster reflect the mood of the film, I’m having trouble imagining how the Bacharach track would have to sound to share the same vibe… Still, I’m sure DA could do it.

While I was looking for a decent version of Casino Royale to listen to, I came across this reinstrumented version of Die Another Day (orchestral). Hmmmm….

  9. Fair enough, I just broke out the original Herb Alpert version and gave it a good listen. I’m always partial to horns (all time horn section classic theme: Return of the Saint) and I still love the song, but it probably is a bit too “light-hearted and jaunty” for the (unnecessarily) re-invisioned Bond.

Completely agree on DA. Randall & Hopkirk, brilliant, his Bond stuff has been really good and well implemented – I thought he was channeling the spirit of John Barry during the first half of Tomorrow Never Dies (which is not a bad thing) but he’s moved on to a new sound that is both modern and still keeps the feel of the classic Bond soundtracks. Big Finish 8th Doctor theme… completely uninspiring. It feels like the tune never actually begins by the time it is over.
