Squeezing Freeview

I’ve got my Linux PVR back up and running (in fact my sister has insisted I record her boyfriend’s appearance, in a false moustache, in the BBC’s Egypt programme). I’ve noticed that recordings on BBC One take twice the disk space of recordings on five. It seems they’ve been compressing channels on some multiplexes. And now they’re squeezing another channel in. This is well and good if the compression truly is better and picture quality isn’t degraded (the bonus being I can record more per MB) but the danger is we’re going to get more and more channels and none of them with watchable picture quality. Especially since it isn’t all that great to start with…
