I feel you have literally missed the point of Ben’s and my criticism of what Mary Shelley has wrought. It has NOTHING to do with scientific research or ethics and entirely to do with the long shadow of influence over lurid novelists and scriptwriters, and their shorthand portrayal of scientists as amoral and oblivious to the consequences of their work. Dr. Frankenstein is the holotype for the “scientists don’t know what they’re doing and making horrors through their own hubris” characterization on scientists.

That shorthand colors the popular perception of scientific research and helps bolster the anti-science attitude that fosters the positions of quacks and science-deniers.
