The Shuffle

The new iPod Shuffle is 7g lighter (down from 22g to 15g) and half as long (down from 84mm to 21mm). But it’s wider and deeper by 2mm (up from 25mm to 27mm and 8mm to 10mm respectively). Plus the clip.

Then there’s the memory stick factor – there’s no indication the new one can be used as a memory stick and anyway, it needs a dock to function.

I’m really not sure. Should I pop down to Dixons before they sell out of the old kind?

  1. I’ve had a shuffle since they first came out, I’ve never once used it as a memory stick. The reason is because you have to bifurcate the storage space into music and data sections. Since the music section is only 1 GB to start with and my music collection is 20+GB I always felt like it would be a waste of space.

Especially since good, much, much larger USB flash drives are available, cheaper.

My $0.02. (Is there a British equivalent to that phrase?)

  3. That’s be my tu’pence worth. Due to the exchange rate, that’d make our opinions more expensive – except I think it’s probably pre-decimalisation, making them considerably cheaper.

I do have a 40GB iPod (which just recently has become too small for my collection) so I don’t need masses of music on the Shuffle. I just want something more portable for short trips, the old 4G iPod can continue to come along on train journeys. And so I’d happily give half the Shuffle over to storage.

However, you make a good point in that if I could find a drive the size of (the other half) of the old shuffle, the total size would be no greater. Plus the new shuffle seems about £15 cheaper so it wouldn’t cost anymore in total.

All the same, comparing the Shuffles, I’d like the simplicity of just being able to plug the thing into my laptop. No leads, no dock, no fuss.

    Still wavering.

  5. Very good point, the original Shuffle is very convenient for just plugging into a computer without extra stuff. (Although, the cap is easily lost.)

Personally, I’m holding out for the iPod Shuffle With Video. 🙂

  7. With the new Shuffle in the shops today, Apple are offering refurbished 1G 1GB Shuffles at £40 (plus postage). I’ve just ordered one. I’m now off to wait by the letterbox.

  10. Shuffle arrived! With the announcement of the new Macbooks that makes today one of the best Wednesdays so far this November.

Now I just need a computer capable of running iTunes to be able to use the Shuffle.
